Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of
reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age
five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community
partners in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and
Republic of Ireland.
Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts over
1 million free books each month to children around the world.
The Beta Delta Chapter decided in the summer of 2020 to participate in Imagination Library Program. Our 501©(3) partner is the San Diego County Literacy Council.
We started at Laurel Elementary School in Oceanside with our member, Susie Cornish, as our liaison. She has been a great asset to the program—inspiring the translation of the application form into Spanish, which had not been done before. Susie teaches kindergarten and she likes to have families with newborns enroll so they will receive a monthly book for five years.
Each child we enroll cost $25 a year and they receive an age appropriate book every month until they turn five years old. The last book they receive is “Hello, Kindergarten”
Our chapter committee has set a goal of enrolling 20 children per year. In 2021-2022, we enrolled 13 children.
