Wow! Thank you, Sandi Hadder, for mentioning the Days for Girls organization at the May chapter meeting. Days for Girls is an international nonprofit organization that provides kits for girls to use during their menstrual period. The kits primarily go to African nations where girls are not allowed to attend school during their time of the month. Days for Girls provides the kits along with training in their use. The organization has been operational for 11 years. The Escondido group has been in existence for three years.
The Saturday I attended, I was one of 10 ladies in attendance for the first time and we all hit the ground running. I did not take my sewing machine as I did not know what really to expect, but after given my assignment I did not stop until the supplies were gone. My job with two other ladies was folding the inserts and then putting one insert in a shield. There are plenty of none sewing tasks to do and there is quality control. In honor of the 11th year anniversary the international goal was to receive from the chapters enough kits to total 11,000. We packed 275 kits that day. The kits packed for this event were to be sent to Syrian and Palestinian women and girls living in the refugee camps of Lebanon. Even though Africa is the primary destination, the kits will go to wherever there may be a need.
Each kit contains: 2 shields, 8 inserts, 2 pairs of briefs, one washcloth, small bar of soap. I plan on going to their workdays which are held on Saturdays at the Sundance Mobile Home Park, 2250 North Broadway, Escondido.
How can you help? The supply of briefs for the girls was wiped out with the July packing. They are in need of brief or bikini cut girls sizes 10,12,14,16. Try to avoid faces, animals or words. Bright colors are good. Target and Wal-Mart are good sources now as kids are getting ready for school. If you wish to donate some, please bring to the September 12th meeting and I will take them to the workday scheduled for the 14th
